Gain Clarity In Your Business

Written by Tammy Durden

Clarity is important in your business. When you are wishy-washy, others pick up on it. Indecision shows in your marketing and when you speak to prospective clients.

Asking the hard questions starts you on your journey from indecision toward making choices you really want. Right now, you are probably struggling with a variety of options, yet what you need is to decide on ONE main thing.

This will involve making hard choices and asking difficult questions of yourself. If you stop and think about each one, consider your first thoughts, as often that is the thing you really want to do.

Next in your journey of discovery is the big why question. Why did you start a business? Why are you doing what you’re doing?

Consider all the reasons you do in business and ask yourself why you have taken that path. After each question, stop and take time to answer it. Whether on paper or in a digital notebook, reflect and write down your thoughts on each of these questions.

Take the time to write out all of your thoughts. This is what I call a ‘braindump’. It essentially allows you to consider these questions and dump all the thoughts running through your mind, and put them in your notes. So, they are no longer running through your thoughts.

Documenting it also helps you sort through what is important to you.

This is a big question. If I ask you, “What is it you want?” How would you answer that? Write it all down and let your brain just dump that out on your paper or digital notebook.

What you want may be tied to your why, or it may not. For me, my VA business and my digital marketing agency also seemed like a means to an end. And it was. It was what brought me to coaching – what I was always meant to be. If I had not experienced owning these businesses, I would not be able to help others in their business. Part of my why is to help others, especially women. So, I knew that I wanted to help others in a deeper way, and that is what coaching is and what it does.

As you consider what you want, you will then consider if you get what you want, what will that look like for you? If you could describe what it would look like if you got to what you want, how would that look exactly? Consider it all from your role to having a team and more.

Think about it as a real, tangible thing. What will your office look like? What will your colors be? What does your logo look like? How many do you want on your team for your agency? What services will you offer? Record it all in your notes.

Now, consider what will need to change to get to that place? What has to change so you can be in that business? Is there anything you can think of that needs to change for you to make your business a reality?

Do you need to put more money into marketing? Do you have to create more content? Do you need to bring on a team? Do you need to start offering those services? Write out everything that would need to change so that you have what you want.

The last question I would ask is, “What if you make those changes, what happens?” Can you make those changes today? If not, what is your timeline for changes?

Are you serious about what you want? If you are, then hopefully, going through this exercise brings out something to help you make the changes needed to get to what you really want.

The bottom line is getting to what you want. How can you achieve this? Making the changes you need empowers you to get to that place. Making a timeline of when you will make these changes helps you. Ask a colleague to help you be accountable to your timeline.

You’ve already started on achieving your goal by going through this exercise. It reveals your true want and the steps needed to get you to that place.

Lastly, I will tell you that a coach can help you through this process so much better than reading about it. You’ve taken the first steps; next, reach out to a coach to see how they can help you as you try to reach your goal.

Having a goal is a great place to start, but the real work starts when someone is there who can help prod you through the processes needed.

Don’t hesitate to reach out to me. Remember, I do offer a free 30 Minute Coaching Session. Or reach out to a coach you know. I hope you reach your goal of what you really want! It feels so good when you do.
